What are symptoms of cystic fibrosis?

The symptoms depend on the nature of the defect of the gene (mutation). The focus of complaints is usually the upper respiratory tract, the lungs and the digestive system.

The most common symptoms are:

  • chronic cough with mucous discharge
  • digestive disorders
  • underweight

In the course of the disease the symptoms spread and complications develop. The following are affected:

  • pancreas (diabetes mellitus)
  • liver
  • gallbladder / biliary tracts (bile stones)
  • kidneys
  • bone (osteoporosis)
  • sex organs (up to 98 percent of the affected men are sterile)

The sperm production is preserved, as well as potency. Paternity by artificial insemination is therefore just as possible as a normal sexual life.
