COPD - Treatment & therapy

Treatment & therapy of COPD

Although many studies have been carried out in this field, COPD remains incurable.  Therefore, the central treatment targets are:

  • Slowing down the disease progress
  • Improvement of physical abilities
  • Relief of symptoms
  • Improvement of the general condition
  • Increase of physical well-being and quality of life
  • Avoiding complications
  • Relief of comorbidities

The most important measure is giving up smoking consequently and permanently. Passive smoking must be avoided as well. Moreover, there is a large number of medicines and non-medical treatment options available. Via a nasal cannula, you receive pure oxygen, which increases your performance and life expectancy. Certain patient groups can undergo surgery. For such a treatment, the following conditions must be met:

  • A part of the lung can be removed and provided with artificial valves.  This can combat the hyperinflation of the lung and the complicated expiration.
  • Through a lung transplant, the whole organ or parts of the damaged lung can be replaced by a donor organ.
